On Thursday, two decomposing bodies were found in Niger State’s Mokwa Local Government Area. They are thought to have been victims of the disastrous flood that hit Mokwa town on May 29, 2025.
After a heavy downpour, the water drove many people away from their homes and submerged buildings. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, verified the two bodies’ recovery on Thursday.
“A heavy downpour on Wednesday washed away the sand dunes that had covered the corpses, and the bodies were found downstream of the bridge where the floodwater had passed,” he said.
He added that Wednesday’s rains, which flowed down the water channel, washed away the sand dunes that buried the dead bodies, causing them to rot beyond recognition.
The two dead bodies were found on Thursday downstream of the bridge. According to the Niger State Government, 207 individuals have been officially declared deceased in the tragedy, while at least 700 people are still unaccounted for.
